Poker Tournaments Online
Tournament poker is a different beast than traditional table, or 'ring' games. In a poker tournament,
play continues until only one person has all of the chips. Poker tournaments are held in a variety of games from the ever-popular Texas Hold'em
to 7 Card Stud.
There are several different kinds of tournaments being held at online poker rooms.
Free Rolls:
Some tournaments are held without an entry fee. The prizes are real, and may include anything from a hat or shirt up to a
seat in the World Series of Poker. In the beginning poker rooms used to allow players without real money accounts to play in these touraments. Now, that is
uncommon. Instead poker rooms tend to requires players have a real money account, and sometimes they require players to have
played in a certain number of raked hands.
Sit and Go:
Sometimes called poker 'shootouts', Sit and Go tournaments begin as soon as a poker table fills with players. Players play against
others at the table, and no one else. Many poker rooms offer Sit and Go tournaments in a variety of games.
Multi-Table:
Larger tournaments have too many players to place at the same table. These tournaments generally have larger payouts because of the
higher number of participants. In order to gather so many players together, these tournaments usually have registration periods
and begin at a set time.
As players are eliminated from the tournament, remaining players are moved to different tables to keep the tables balanced. This way
no one table has ten players while another has only four.
All of the large Feature Tournaments, like the Party Poker Million, are multi-table tournaments.
Satellites:
Some tournaments offer fantastic prizes. Usually that means a large entry fee. In order to get more people into the
tournament, often times there are Satellite tournaments. These Satellites offer a seat in the larger tournament as a prize. The entry fee for a satellite
tournament is uch cheaper than buying directly into the feature tournament.
Sometimes there are super-satellites where the prize is a seat at the satellite tournament. Super-satellites usually
have a very low entry fee.
